A garden suite is a self-contained home in a detached building in your back or interior side yard. It can house family close by or bring in rental income without sharing your main house.
Is it allowed on my lot?
Brampton allows garden suites as part of its three-unit rules: one combination is the main house, one attached second unit and one separate garden suite. Garden suites are ancillary to single detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings, subject to zoning.
How the process starts
Unlike a basement unit, a garden suite starts with the City's Planning Division. After planning approval, a building permit application is required.
Planning the build
- Lot size, setbacks and access to the back yard
- Water, sewer and electrical connections
- A compact, livable layout
- Walkways and stone work to connect the suite
Registration
Like second units, garden suites must be registered with the City of Brampton to be legal.
